Is Co-Enzyme Q-10 A Miracle Supplement?
The word on the street is that CQ10 – sometimes called CoQ10 or Coenzyme Q10 – is a miracle
supplement and is touted as a panacea for a variety of ailments and conditions.
CQ10 is present in all human cells and assists in energy production and is a natural antioxidant.
Many folk see CoQ10 as a natural supplement to enhance their energy output and generally increase their
wellness. Alternatively, other folk are of the opinion that a regular intake of Coenzyme Q10 is good for the heart without delving much deeper into the reasons for this
information. What Is Coenzyme Q10?
Like many supplements CQ10 is a constituent part of many popular everyday
foods such as mackerel and sardines as well as liver and beef and is also seen in ground nuts (peanuts) and soya
beans.
Does CQ10 Have Any Side Effects?
Like all foods, supplements and medicines, it’s horses for courses as someone
somewhere will always have the occasional side effect whatever they eat or drink; and Coenzyme Q10 is no different.
Most medicinal products are subject to exhaustive tests and are generally safe for most people. Nevertheless, there
have been some reports of an itchy feeling along with the usual medicinal side effects of rashes, headaches, upset
stomach, dizziness, flu style symptoms and nausea among others. However, there is evidence that CQ10 may well lower
blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
CQ10 Is A Food
That is to say, in the United Kingdom, CQ10
is treated as a supplement rather than as a medicinal product. This means that the product is not subject to the
same stringent tests as registered medical products. Therefore, it is vital you consult your own registered medical
practitioner before embarking on a course of Coenzyme Q10. However, be
warned, many doctors view most supplements with some suspicion.
Crucially, there is no hard and fast evidence that the supplement is safe or
otherwise for women in pregnancy or breast feeding.
The Hollywood Effect Of CoQ10
It only needs some starlet to espouse the benefits of a product and the effects on
her skin and hey presto the supplement assumes a life of its own. In some areas CoQ10 is being promoted as a
miracle skin care product to rejuvenate sun-damaged and wrinkled skin. It might work or it might not; you pay your
money and take your choice. Nonetheless, there is no actual published clinical proof either way.
Coenzyme Q10 And Heart Problems
There is some evidence that heart attack victims have a lower than usual shortage
of CQ10, in fact, in some cases as much as 65% - 70%. Some doctors have linked this deficiency to the use of
statins which are said to reduce the effectiveness of natural CQ10. As always, there may well be a trade-off
as to the lesser of two evils. Unquestionably, Coenzyme Q10 can help in
some circumstances and there have been encouraging studies on the effects of CoQ10 on diabetes, heart failure and
Parkinson’s disease. However, there is a long way to go as conclusive studies are still in their
infancy.
Is Co-Enzyme Q-10 a miracle
supplement? The jury is still out on this one and the only sensible advice to anyone wanting to try it is to
consult your doctor – especially if you are taking other prescriptive medicines.
